The 3-Week Bathroom: What Happens Each Week

For many homeowners, the excitement of a new bathroom is often tempered by one major concern: how long will the house be a building site? We have all heard stories of "2-week" projects that stretch into two months, leaving families without a fully functional bathroom for weeks on end.

At Jeremy Colson Bathrooms, we do things differently. We specialise in a guaranteed 3-week installation. By managing the new bathroom project from start to the final complimentary clean on the final day, we ensure your home returns to normal quickly. Here is what you can expect during those 3 weeks:

Week 1: Preparation and Essential Work

The first day is all about protection and preparation before any ripping out begins. Our team installs heavy-duty carpet and hard floor protection and new plastic sheeting over any that needs to be protected and dust free. Once the area is secure, we begin the rip out. This involves removing everything in your old bathroom. We are a family run business with our own experienced team. We have our own plumbers and electricians and they get all the plumbing and electrical 1st fixes done. All old existing pipework including all old waste pipework is removed and replaced. All the old electrical wiring is removed and replaced by our electrician. We may need to over tack the old ceiling with new plasterboard and dot and dab old walls with new plasterboard, which is essential for lovely new level walls! Our objective at the end of Week 1 is to have the bathroom fully plastered and ready for the next stage…Week 2.

Week 2: Taking Shape

With all last week's work done, the new bathroom is progressing to plan. All walls within the new shower area and bath area are fully waterproofed. Work now begins on the floor to strengthen it, using WBP marine ply, then fitting cement boards (a British Standard requirement in new bathrooms), and then a de-coupling/waterproofing membrane, which is where we fit the electric underfloor heating cabling. The shower tray is now installed &/or bath. If there is a feature bath, then this won’t be installed until Week 3. Our shower trays are best colour matched to the chosen floor tile and are at the same level as the finished tiled floor. 

We can now begin to lay the floor tiles, in whatever size has been chosen. Our expert fitters ensure that all floor and wall tiles are fitted perfectly. We love feature alcoves as you will see on our website. The rear of these can have feature tiles that match the splashback tile on the basin unit. If our design includes our handmade bathroom furniture which is usually a basin unit, framed mirror or wall cabinet/s, then these are already in production, ready to be delivered during Week 3. Off the shelf pre-manufactured furniture can still look great, but offers less options and also colours and finishes. Painting of the ceiling and walls are also now in the early stages.

Week 3: Finishing Touches and Handover

The final week is where the new bathroom really starts to truly come to life. The wall tiling is completed as well as the alcoves, bottom tiles of alvove/s, splashback tiles and any window sills. The handmade furniture is installed and the electrical 2nd fix items are completed by our electrician. Everything is tested and Part P Electrical Certificates will then be issued following completion.We install all the fixtures & fittings and make any adjustments to make sure everything is thoroughly tested and working properly. This week is also about the fine details and finishing work that make a Jeremy Colson bathroom feel like a lovely retreat. We ensure everything is completed to perfection.

Finally, we don't just pack up and leave. We remove all the protective kit and have performed a professional deep clean of all the areas we have worked within during your project. Your new bathroom is now ready to be used for the first time!
