Finding the right tiles for your new bathroom

Once you are at the planning stage, choosing tiles will be one of the most important decisions you’ll make. With the vast amount of choices on the market, it can be difficult to decide which tiles will work best for your space.

Tiles are an integral part of every new bathroom and should not be chosen in isolation from other features; it is important to properly consider your space, style of property and colour scheme before picking your tiles.

Picking the size that works for your space

A common choice for both large and small bathrooms are medium sized tiles, which are always viewed as a safe choice. However, you shouldn’t be afraid to use larger or smaller sized tiles. Larger tiles can make a room feel bigger, because the grout lines will be less frequent; this will give your bathroom a more open feel.

Smaller sized tiles can be used in tricky areas or as features, for example if the space between the basin, toilet and other features is compact; smaller tiles will require less cuts and will create a more streamlined look. Keep in mind that wall tiles should never be larger than than the floor tiles you use

Setting the mood with colour

The color of tiles helps to set the tone of a room. Before deciding on a tile colour for any surface, you should think about the colours of other features and the mood you want for the room. Dimmable lighting can promote the paint colours within the bathroom, while lighter tile colours can promote a greater feeling of space, especially when the same colour is used for floor and wall tiles.

You can use pastels and neutrals if you want to make your bathroom appear larger, while larger bathrooms can benefit from the use of darker or bolder colours. This can be a good way of injecting some energy into the room. However, if you want to create a more tranquil feeling, using a different saturation of the same colours will help you achieve just that.

Keep cleaning in mind

The bathroom is one of the most important rooms in your home to keep clean. Keeping your tiles and grout in top condition will help them retain their beautiful look for longer and slow down the discolouration of the grout. Clean tiles and grout will improve the appearance of any bathroom, making the room appear brighter, cleaner and larger.

Tiles made from natural stone and marble require more maintenance than porcelain or ceramic tiles. It may be a good idea to use natural stone or marble on the floor to add texture, while porcelain, ceramic and natural stone or marble tiles will also look great used as wall tiles.

Tiles are an integral part of every new bathroom and should not be chosen in isolation from other features

Tiles will have crucial impact on the completed bathroom, both the look and functionality of your new bathroom. You need to consider how the space will be used and what style you would like to achieve. You may have seen pictures in a magazine or on the internet of your dream bathroom, or indeed elements that you really like.

If you’re stuck for ideas, create a mood board with images, colours and materials the materials you like. You can use this to communicate your vision to others. There are no hard-and-fast rules about what tiles you should consider, so try to stay creative and open to different concepts and ideas.
